The Virtual Job Summit is just two weeks away, and that means that the opportunity to speak directly to recruiters by video chat is coming up. Some of you may wonder, how can I be successful on camera?
The first principle is to prepare as you would for an in-person engagement. That means:
1. Research the Employer and their open positions. Know specifics about positions that interest you.
2. Bring specific questions about the Employer and their positions.
For the past two months, Bio Careers members have been gearing up for the Spring 2012 Virtual Job Summit. As one of the most effective and creative resources Bio Careers provides, this biannual event brings together employers in academia, industry and other fields with life science postgraduate jobseekers. The inaugural event in 2011 was a tremendous success with over 600 scientists in attendance, and marked the first online job summit exclusively for life scientists.
A Virtual Job Summit: Meet employers from all over the country sitting at your own desk.
Ten years ago, if I might make a guesstimate, such an idea would have not excited the same amount of attention for job seekers or employers. Mainly because the job market was thriving with job seekers that were well acquainted with the big, no holds barred, venue based job fairs.
One of the problems with last fall’s Job Summit that we heard back from you about was that some booths were terribly overcrowded, and it was hard to reach a recruiter even during their Office Hours.
We heard you!
For the Spring Summit, there will be a link at each booth to a sign up sheet. You can place your name on the signup sheet any time between Feb 1st and the Office Hours on April 4th and 5th. Recruiters will use the list to invite you to a one on one chat.
We’re getting very excited about this Spring’s Job Summit, which opens Feb 1st (you can begin reviewing the Employer Booths) with live days on April 4th and 5th (you can video chat with Employers during their Office Hours).

The Virtual Job Summit is a great opportunity to make yourself known to employers that interest you. Employers are looking for top talent from across the U.S. to fill their open positions. Here are some ways to ensure you make the most of your experience:
1. Shop the employer booths early and often. In particular, be sure to come to the Summit in the week before the October 5th/6th live days, as that’s when the most employers will be represented.
2. Study the materials and listings employers are presenting in their booths to see which ones match you best.
I’m getting really excited about the upcoming Job Summit, and wanted to share with you some of the events that are part of it. We have a a great series of speakers already lined up, with more to be scheduled:
