Hello everyone!
Since this is my first blog submission after the Biocareers.com webinar last week, I wanted to re-address one of the topics I brought up, and continue some thoughts raised by the follow up questions from the audience.

I made the point that in order to have an orderly, consistent job search campaign, a job seeker should research companies, and identify organizations that already employ people with a skill set similar to what you have to offer.
All efforts should be directed at marketing yourself to these companies, whether or not an opening presently exists, and I wanted to go a bit deeper into the reasoning behind this.
We’ve all been passed over for positions and promotions because the powers that be “already have someone in mind,” right? Someone gets brought in from the outside who takes a position we bid on internally, and right away we think the hire was a product of a “good old boy” network, or some other nefarious conspiracy…or we’re told by the interviewer that we are “one of the top three candidates,” and out of nowhere a fourth person shows up and gets the offer.
Raise your hand if you’ve been there…if it hasn’t happened to you yet, it will. Just keep on living.
Anyway – When you maintain contact with people who can hire you, AND you demonstrate throughout that you BELONG in their world, UNDERSTAND their business and can SOLVE their problems, you set yourself up for success down the road.
In other words, over time, you become that person that is “kept in mind” when positions and opportunities open up.
Instead of hoping the stars align and your CV lands in the right inbox at the right time, you assume the responsibility of continually positioning yourself where you need to be.
HINT: If people are telling you: “I would hire you if I had an open position” you are on the right track as far as positioning yourself and communicating your value. Don’t lose heart, as you are actually getting closer to landing something, the more often you hear this.
Remember my earlier teaching – you need to do this with more than just one company or contact. Good job hunters are busy people, so keep 6 – 10 things going at all times.
As I have always stressed, the world is not a static place…it keeps turning on, and opportunities that were not there one day will suddenly open up…might not be the next day, but maybe the next week or month. Be ready.
There are no guarantees, but if you remain committed to your plan, you can capitalize on opportunities as they arise, instead of missing out.
Until next time,
Coach Tom
